I know Shane is in the middle of creating a post about a PID controller but I thought I'd show my simple set up. Here are the components: Auber Instruments SWA-2442C - 1/16 DIN PID Process Controller w/ Timer & Alarm This controller has 10A relay contacts, most blankets run 5-8A so no solid state relay is required. Auber Instruments TC-K5 - k Type Thermocouple, Bare International shipping to Canada was $12 US Attachment: PID-1.jpg Attachment: PID-2.jpg Attachment: PID-3.jpg The on/off switch is just a basic house switch. The single plug I pulled off the non-working router speed controller I got years ago from John Hall, so is the power cable. Here's the schematic I used, thanks to Dave Fifield Attachment: schematic.jpg You'll notice in my actual wiring job that I jumped post 11 & 12. This needs to happen in order for the timer to be enabled. Total cost to me was under $100 CAN. Took about 2 hours to fully set up, including slight modification to my bender base. Took another 1.5-2 hours to figure out the "programming". I like this controller as it controls both the temperature and has the timer built in. Works like a charm! The rest is pretty easy. |

Nice Rod. I am hoping to wire mine up soon as well and will photo document. I started putting the "inside" shop together and put the timer on hold while I get that mostly done. We will see if I can do something comparable to what you have done. Although mine is for two blankets and separate timer functionality for each.... Thanks for post Rod. Shane |

I would advise adding a bathroom style timer between the controller output and the blanket, much less chance of a scorched side or burned shop. I also like simple and straight forward, my controller also has enough output for the blanket without the external relay. Fred |
